Can you believe that half of Australian children with mental illness aren’t getting timely professional help and less than a third of parents are using services to help their struggling children.

Last week the Federal Government released a new ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—–๐—ต๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ปโ€™๐˜€ ๐— ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ช๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ด๐˜†ย  targeting children 0-12 to provide a framework to address lengthy waiting lists and high out of pocket expenses for families.

Take a listen to what one of the most preeminent voices on mental health in Australia – Professor Patrick McGorry (Australian on the Year, researcher and renowned psychiatrist) has to say about the need for more targeted and earlier mental health support strategies across a child’s lifespan as well as the need for integrated services in one stop shops like the one currently being built right here in the Midcoast with First Steps Count Child and Community Centre

Professor Patrick McGorry (Australian of the Year, Researcher and preeminent psychiatrist) says that across the lifespan less than half of all Australians who need help get it.
Integrated hub models such as First Steps Count Child and Community Centre in Taree are a wonderful model for early intervention mental health support, according to Professor Patrick McGorry.
ONE STOP SHOP MODELS NEEDED: Professor McGorry says to address mental health problems facing our younger children: “we need accessible venues with multi-disciplinary teams in the community where families live, can access them easily and without the big financial barriers you get in a purely private practice model, that may be only partially funded by medicare leaving big gap payments which puts care out of reach.”
